Windsor Council appoints Jo-Anne Gignac as new City Councillor

Council votes 7-2 in favour of appointing Gignac to fill vacancy in Ward 1

At a special meeting on Monday, June 6, 2023, Windsor City Council voted 7-2 in favour of appointing Jo-Anne Gignac to fill the vacant seat in Ward 1. Gignac will serve the remainder of the term, which ends in October 2026.

The vacancy was created when former Ward 1 Councillor Fred Francis resigned in April 2023 to run for the Liberal nomination in Windsor West in the upcoming provincial election.

Gignac is a long-time resident of Windsor and has been involved in the community in a number of ways. She is a former member of the Windsor Police Services Board and the Windsor Essex County Health Unit Board of Directors. She is also a past president of the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board.

Gignac's priorities for Ward 1

In her application to Council, Gignac outlined her priorities for Ward 1, which include:

  • Improving public safety
  • Investing in infrastructure
  • Promoting economic development
  • Protecting the environment
  • Enhancing community engagement

Gignac said she is excited to get to work on behalf of the residents of Ward 1.

"I am honoured to have been appointed to this position and I look forward to working with my colleagues on Council to make a positive difference in our community," said Gignac.

Gignac was sworn in as Ward 1 Councillor at the start of the June 6 Council meeting.
